The style of Ju Jitsu we teach is called Danzan Ryu; we also teach the sport of Judo and a weapon system called Bokendo. Our school was founded by William (Bill) Montero. In 1949, shortly after relocating from Honolulu to San Jose, CA, he opened Pacific Judo Academy and was later assisted by his son, William (Don) Montero, who had been studying the arts since childhood. Both became well known for their traditional teaching style, personal competition success and coaching success in national level Judo tournaments as well as mastery of Danzan Ryu Ju Jitsu and the rare art of Bokendo.
Just days prior to passing away, Bill Montero gave his blessing for the academy to continue on and in its spirit of never accepting defeat, the academy persevered and is thriving today. As Pacific Judo & Ju Jitsu Academy, it is headed by one of Bill Montero’s closer students, Angelo Caruana who began studying the arts over 30 years ago, first under him and later under under his son, Don Montero. Angelo Caruana is assisted by his six senior students: Paul Yoshimune, Frank Santiago, Yannick Barel, David Nguyen, Mike Johnson, Joey Caruana. These instructors are the finest a school could ask for with regard to teaching skills, performance, maturity, care and safety.
